Arts and culture a school holidays hit

School holidays activities were a hit with children and parents.

SSI Community Kitchen was the venue for the second workshop, where another group of children also tried 3D hand drawings, as well cup cake decorating organised SSI staff.

Arts & Culture Coordinator Carolina Triana said providing activities for children during the holidays benefited them as much as their parents.

“Some of the kids who joined the workshop in Auburn had only been in Australia for three months,” Ms Triana said.

“These activities provided an opportunity for the family to have an outing together, see a new part of Sydney and connect with the local community.”

A highlight of the day in Auburn was seeing peacocks in the beautiful surrounds of the Botanic Gardens, and many parents commented on being relieved to have something interesting to do with bored children.

SSI currently supports more than 350 families of refugee background and those seeking asylum in Australia.

SSI CEO Violet Roumeliotis said SSI was committed to supporting newly arrived families and children, and to helping them settle and adjust to their new home as smoothly as possible.

“SSI provides a number of projects that focus on strengthening families, and providing important early intervention and capacity-building support,” said Ms Roumeliotis.

SSI thanks Auburn Council Arts Coordinator, Jenny Cheeseman, and the staff at Peacock Gallery for their support of this initiative.
