NewsCommunity Iftar in Campbelltown
Iftar is the meal shared among people of Muslim faith when they break their fast during Ramadan. The group of about 150 included people from Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Morocco, Myanmar, Palestine, Sudan, Syria and Turkey.
Campbelltown City Council, Tharawal Local Aboriginal Land Council and Afghani Fajar Association representatives also attended.
The Iftar began with a Welcome to Country and acknowledgement of the traditional custodians of the land.
Macarthur Diversity Services case manager Sana Al-Ahmar said guests brought food to share, children made craft and decorations and some people recited poetry.
“The best part of the night was having all the different communities together, exchanging stories and enjoying themselves,” Ms Al-Ahmar said.
Staff members who organised the community Iftar said it was a great success in connecting people, especially clients seeking asylum, from different backgrounds.
