New arrivals – opportunity or threat? Second generation Australians and their views on race, migration and asylum seekers

Those who have come after them face similar challenges; according to the latest Scanlon Foundation’s report, recent arrivals from non-English speaking countries report high levels of discrimination compared to the national average. This SSI Speakers’ Series explores how second generation Australians relate to new arrivals and their attitudes on issues related to race, migration and asylum seekers.

Speakers

Lorenzo Fazzini

Lorenzo Fazzini is a second generation Australian, the son of a migrant Italian who travelled to Australia to set up new roots for his growing family in the late 50s. Lorenzo is the third of four children, the first to be born in their new home of Sydney. His father started up a successful manufacturing company in 1960, which Lorenzo now owns and manages, as well as volunteering his time at the Italian organisation CO.AS.IT., where he has held the position of President for the past 11 years.  The CO.AS.IT is a not-for-profit cultural organisation dedicated to care of the aged, and for the teaching of the Italian language in Australia.

Priscilla Brice

Priscilla Brice is the founder and Managing Director of All Together Now, Australia’s only national racism prevention charity. Priscilla was recently awarded a Churchill Fellowship that enabled her to visit, investigate and learn from antiracism NGOs in Europe and North America during 2014. Priscilla was also awarded a University of Western Sydney Community Award in 2013 for establishing the award-winning One Parramatta project and All Together Now more broadly. Priscilla has more than a decade of experience managing social marketing and social change projects. She is currently studying for an MBA (Executive) at the University of NSW, completed a Graduate Certificate in Social Impact in 2011 and the Sydney Leadership Program in 2008. Prior to working in the not-for-profit sector Priscilla worked as an equities research assistant in the investment banking sector.

Justin Truong

Justin Truong is a third year university student studying Commerce and Law at the University of NSW. In his university life, he has been an active member of the UNSW Law Society as well as the Vietnamese Students’ Association of NSW Inc. (VSA NSW). Currently, he is the President of VSA NSW overseeing the operations of the association and its affiliated chapters at seven university branches across NSW.

AngeloGavrielatos

Angelo Gavrielatos’ primary expertise is in the development and implementation of campaigns in a range of social justice areas in Australian and overseas. They include campaigns aimed at addressing the rights of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) students and their communities; the educational well-being of students from the lowest socio-economic status (SES) communities; the development of sound policy in the area of multiculturalism and multicultural education; the rights of asylum seeker and refugee children and their families; and international solidarity.

Angelo is the Project Director at Educational International (EI) responsible for leading EI’s response to the growing commercialisation and privatisation of education. He was the Federal President of the Australian Education Union (AEU) for seven years prior to commencing work with EI.

Ky Chow

Ky Chow is the multimedia editor at the Australian Financial Review, where he runs the video team and also writes across a range of topics. After career stints in accounting and marketing, Ky took a path less common among Australian-born Chinese by switching to journalism, working at SBS as a radio journalist, then a business reporter at Sky News Business before moving to the Fairfax-owned Financial Review. He has a keen interest in diversity and multicultural issues.

About the SSI Speakers’ Series: During 2015, Settlement Services International (SSI) will host a series of talks and panel discussions on current refugee and asylum seeker issues and related topics. The SSI Speakers’ Series aims to inform, connect and challenge SSI staff, stakeholders and the wider community by providing opportunities for discussion that enhance knowledge and awareness about relevant issues impacting the organisation’s clients and their communities.
